Design of a centrifugal compressor
Despite the variety of models, units based on the centrifugal principle of gas compression are equipped with a standard set of components:
- a robust metal casing;
- inlet and outlet nozzles;
- impellers accelerating the gas flow;
- a diffuser that converts the kinetic energy of the gas flow into increased pressure;
- a driver (diesel, electric, steam, etc.).

- number of compression stages: single-stage, multistage;
- degree of enclosure of the rotating element;
- number of shafts: single-shaft, multi-shaft;
- relative arrangement of impellers: unidirectional, counter-rotating;
- type of compressed gas: air, oxygen, nitrogen;
- casing type:
- with a horizontal (pressure up to 60 atm) or vertical (up to 700 atm) split, providing access to the rotor;
- with an integrated gearbox.
Principle of operation
The operation of centrifugal rotary units is based on dynamic compression of the gas due to the rotation of the impeller blades. As a result, the gas moves from the centre to the periphery, is compressed and accelerated. The next stage is a reduction in velocity in the diffuser and the conversion of kinetic energy into potential (pressure) energy. The medium then moves into the return channel and enters the next stage.
The components of the equipment are protected from corrosion and rapid wear by lubrication.
