A medium that changes its state from gaseous to liquid at temperatures of -50 °C and below is referred to as a cryogenic medium. It is characterized by increased hazards during operation. That is why special attention is paid to cryogenic valves and fittings, which are responsible for the performance and tightness of the system.
Application of cryogenic valves and fittings
To control the flow of working media in liquid and gaseous states in air separation units, general-purpose and special-purpose cryogenic pipeline valves and fittings are used. Remote and automatic control of air separation units is provided by valve components with electric and pneumatic actuators.
For example:
- Safety valves are installed on equipment, vessels and pipelines to prevent the maximum allowable pressure from being exceeded;
- Check valves allow flow to pass in only one direction, for example to prevent alkali from being carried over from the decarbonizer back into the compressor;
- Throttle valves are used to reduce the pressure of compressed gases;
- Cold shut-off valves operate at temperatures down to -200 °C;
- and others.
Requirements
GOST 34294–2017 applies to all types of pipeline valves and fittings designed for a nominal pressure up to PN 250 and a working medium temperature from -50 to -270 °C. The state standard specifies design features, technical characteristics, classification, permissible materials, manufacturing methods, scope of supply, reliability, safety and resistance to external influences, as well as inspection and test methods.
